Can Acupuncture support fertility and hormonal balance?

Can Acupuncture support fertility and hormonal balance?

For many couples, the journey to starting a family isn't always straightforward. While some conceive quickly, others may spend months, or even years, trying to understand why pregnancy isn't happening. It's often during this journey that people begin looking beyond conventional treatments and explore complementary therapies such as acupuncture. But can acupuncture really support fertility?

    Looking at the whole picture

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doesn't view fertility as a single issue with a single cause. Instead, it looks at the body as an interconnected system. Hormones, stress, sleep, digestion, circulation, emotional well-being, and energy all play an important role in reproductive health.

If one or more of these systems is out of balance, it may affect the body's ability to conceive naturally. Rather than focusing solely on the reproductive organs, acupuncture aims to create an environment where the whole body can function at its best.

    Hormones need balance

Hormones are incredibly sensitive. Stress, poor sleep, illness, nutritional deficiencies and emotional strain can all influence the delicate hormonal signals that regulate ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to help restore balance within the body.

Many women seek treatment to support:

    ∙ regular menstrual cycles
    ∙ Painful or heavy periods
    ∙ PCOS
    ∙ Endometriosis
    ∙ Perimenopause
    ∙ Hormonal imbalance
    ∙ Stress-related cycle disruption
    ∙ IVF preparation
    ∙ General fertility support

Every treatment is tailored to the individual because no two fertility journeys are the same.

    More than just needles

One of the biggest misconceptions about acupuncture is that it's simply about placing needles into the body. In reality, treatment begins with understanding you.
Your sleep, digestion, energy levels, stress, emotional well-being, menstrual history and lifestyle all help build a picture of what's happening beneath the surface.
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that by addressing the underlying imbalance, not simply the symptom, you create the best possible conditions for health and fertility.

Acupuncture and fertility – what does the evidence say?

This is one of the questions I am asked most often.
The honest answer is that acupuncture is not a guaranteed fertility treatment, and no responsible practitioner should promise pregnancy.

However, there is growing research suggesting acupuncture may have a supportive role for some people, particularly alongside fertility treatment. Some systematic reviews have reported improved pregnancy and live birth rates in certain groups of women undergoing IVF. However, the certainty of the evidence ranges from very low to moderate and researchers agree that more high-quality studies are needed.

What is clear is that many patients report feeling calmer, sleeping better and coping more effectively with the emotional demands of trying to conceive, benefits that can be valuable regardless of the treatment pathway.

Creating the best conditions for pregnancy

Fertility is about far more than one moment of conception. It's about preparing the body, reducing unnecessary stress, supporting healthy circulation, encouraging hormonal balance and helping you feel physically and emotionally well throughout the process. Whether you're trying to conceive naturally or preparing for assisted fertility treatment, acupuncture offers a gentle, holistic approach that works alongside your medical care, not in place of it.

    Every journey is different

No practitioner can promise that acupuncture will lead to pregnancy.
What it can do is provide personalised care, take time to understand your health as a whole, and support your body in achieving greater balance. For many people, that's an important part of their fertility journey. If you're considering acupuncture for fertility or hormonal health, we'd be delighted to discuss your individual circumstances and create a treatment plan that's tailored specifically to you.
